The opening track, couldn't have a proper name, is the essence of the album, very enjoyable, must check.

ALICE IN CHAINS - BAD DREAM (1993)

What the hell? Too mainstream for G.O.M.E.? Fuck you, pal! This is, afterall, my blog, and I happen to love ALICE IN CHAINS. This is one of the better soundboards circulating. In fact, my sole criticism is in regards to the setlist: Where's my favorite AIC song, "Rain When I Die"? A great rendition of "Bleed the Freak" almost covers for the slight, though, and this is a thoroughly kickass set from a fantastic band at their peak. This was recorded live in Glasgow, March 2, 1993.

GOON MOON - LICKER'S LAST LEG (2007)

In case you haven't noticed by now, we here at G.O.M.E. tend to worship at the altar of Chris Goss. I track down every record he's affiliated with, from the MASTERS OF REALITY stuff to the more electro UNKLE. GOON MOON is the bizarre soundclash between Goss and Jeordie White (aka Twiggy Ramirez), and Licker's Last Leg is their second album. It's also a front-runner for G.O.M.E. Album of the Year accolades. Is it desert rock? Well, in a sense, yes. Without Chris Goss, there would be no "desert rock" to speak of. However, the experimentation, keyboard orchestration, and use of effects makes this GOON MOON offering a bit more EARTHLINGS? than MASTERS OF REALITY. Rest assured, though, Gomies. There's a lot more to this record than simple blips and bleeps. "An Autumn That Came Too Soon", despite the electronics, is a page directly torn from the Goss/Homme handbook, and if "Pin Eyed Boy" doesn't remind you why you love MASTERS OF REALITY so much, then you clearly have some homework to do. My personal favorite? Ironically it's an earnest cover of the BEE GEES' "Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You".

CORROSION OF COMFORMITY - SIX SONGS WITH MIKE SINGING (1985)

If you dug the SNAKE NATION record, or you're just an old school CORROSION fan, here's a bit of a gem. This is also a good history lesson for younger fans of the Keenan-era C.O.C. I'll never quite understand the logic behind this release (despite living next to Pepper's former roommate for a year), but I'll tell you what I do know: Original hardcore/thrash/crossover/whatever-the-fuck growler Eric Eycke left the band after their debut, Eye for an Eye, so original members Mike Dean, Woody Weatherman and Reed Mullin re-recorded three songs off that record with Dean on vocals, added three more, and released it as this EP. I was but a wee lad when I discovered C.O.C., and needless to say there was no internet, and therefor no information at my disposal. I looked at the cover of this EP and assumed A) Mike Dean must've died, and B) This is a live EP released in tribute. I was obviously wrong on both counts. Still, it's worth a listen. If nothing else, it features the only good song about liking your rock & roll loud. [This EP was later appended to the re-release of Eye for an Eye. I have the originals. Do you? HAHA!]

SNAKE NATION - SNAKE NATION (1989)

This is one our main man Rinjo was hunting for awhile back, and I was finally able to track down a decent copy. SNAKE NATION was the project of two original members of C.O.C., Mike Dean and Woody Weatherman, along with Brian Walsby. Because of this, it obviously has quite a bit in common with CORROSION's early-to-mid-'80s output. Let it be said that even in C.O.C.'s hardcore days, they stood out from the pack because of a distinct SABBATH influence, and SNAKE NATION is certainly not immune to those tendencies. In fact, the majority of the songwriting here is far more daring than the early C.O.C. records, resulting in longer songs and more tempo changes. "I'll Never Shake You" is a good example of this, while "Babylon" sounds like...well...a punk band that digs SABBATH. The ultimate lowlight, though, has to be Dean's rapping on "This Nation", which ruins an otherwise excellent heavy-but-funky riff & groove.

LID - IN THE MUSHROOM (1997)

LID was the legendary Eric Wagner's first post-TROUBLE project, also featuring ANATHEMA guitarist Danny Cavanagh. Truth be told, I've often tried to appreciate this album, and it never stays in heavy rotation. There's definitely some great stuff here. My primary beef is that the record too often veers toward mainstream metal (which, come to think of it, is a complaint I've applied to TROUBLE more than a time or two). The fantastic production might actually hinder the quality of the record, in that it just screams "ARENA METAL" in all its shiny pristine brilliance. If you're too young to have thrown up in your mouth upon hearing TSOL's Strange Love for the first time, then simply rewind to 1997, and imagine what PEARL JAM fans were listening to when they really wanted to "kick some ass". Still, that's not to say there isn't a lot to like here. "Rx" is among Wagner's absolute finest work, and while I'll always be a little creeped-out by his obsession with THE MONKEES, Wagner's Bowie-esque take on "Randy Scouse Git" actually works. Of course, speaking of Wagner's obsessions, THE BEATLES must be mentioned. That influence is prevalent throughout the album (probably more so than on any TROUBLE album, thanks to Cavanagh), but culminates in a cover of "Don't Let Me Down".

Better late than never, right? Gomies (© Mighty Matias), your humble host has found himself in ill health over the past couple weeks. I apologize not only for the tardiness of the show, but for the questionable quality of this one. For almost two weeks, I medicated my broken ribs with the finest greens and Knob Creek (100 proof) bourbon. I avoided painkillers to the absolute best of my ability. Ultimately, I had to throw some Vicodin in the mix in order to mend my tattered bones. Of course, I also kept the greens at hand and upgraded my bourbon to Booker's (124 proof). Consider ER#007 a PSA telling you why you should never do that.

Expect some more records this week. Matias and I have both been slacking lately.

Recorded on 1.15.92 a Wednesday at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle, WA. Both these songs are by Flipper. A one-time live collaboration between Buzz and the two members of Nirvana. Nobody seems to know if this was a melvins show that the members of nirvana showed up for and played a couple covers pre or post melvins set and if there were any other songs played either by these three or other groups. According to a 1995 interview with Dave, they played four full songs.

PORN (THE MEN OF) - PORN AMERICAN STYLE (1999)

Yet another Man's Ruin casualty, resurrected by G.O.M.E. I should've posted this months ago, but never got around to it. In some circles, Porn American Style is considered a genre classic. I probably wouldn't go that far, but it's certainly a great record. The opening track, "Comin' Home", is so hypnotic that you hardly realize it's nearly 17 minutes long. Highly recommended to fans of the the MELVINS' sludgy post-grunge, as well as anyone that loves heavy psychedelic riff-fests.

YEAR LONG DISASTER - S/T (2007)

I belive that Cheeto posted this one on his great blog, but since is link doesn't work anymore I post it here..

melding ‘70s sludge, ‘80s thrash, and ‘90s punk into a heavy rock cornucopia, here is YLD. The bass is heavy, the drums are pounding, and the singing is ferocious on “Year Long Disaster,” but a glance at the power trio’s lineup reveals why the finished product came out so solid. The band is fronted by Daniel Davies, son of founding The Kinks member Dave Davies; bass player Rich Mullins, who toured with popular hard rock band Karma To Burn; and drummer Brad Hargreaves, who hails from Third Eye Blind. What matters is the Sabbath-like crunch of “Cold Killer,” the stoner rock shuffle of “Destination,” and the Southern-fueled ZZ Top swagger of “The Fool And You.” And just when you think they can’t slow it down and flesh out a song, Year Long Disaster closes their album with the eight-minute opus “Swan On Black Lake,” which would be worthy of a spot on any Zeppelin album.

PROGRAM: ANNIHILATOR (1986)

Not really standard G.O.M.E. fare, SST's Program Annihilator compilation is not only a schizophrenically enjoyable listen, but an important historic artifact. I bought this cassette back in '86, and I still have it to this day. Since it took me 21 years to score a copy on CD, I thought I'd pass it on to the Faithful and see what you all think. In 1986, the legendary SST label was eschewing it's punk and art rock, for which it was most famous, in favor of a decidedly metallic direction. Not coincidentally, that was also the direction the label's flagship band, BLACK FLAG, was pursuing at the time. Much like today, the underground fans of the '80s were an extremely fickle bunch, and by most accounts this stylistic 180 was a dismal failure. Personally, I enjoyed the majority of the music here in 1986, and I enjoy it just as much today. I'm assuming most of you are familiar with BLACK FLAG and SAINT VITUS, the two bands featured most heavily on this compilation. The obscure gem, though, might come in the form of OVERKILL (the LA biker punks, not the terrible NY speed metal band). OVERKILL was Merill Ward's (Greg Ginn's buddy) vehicle for creating big dumb MOTORHEAD-MEETS-BLACK FLAG rock & roll. SWA is another Ward band, and while they were more prolific (though I hesitate to say "successful"), Ward is at his absolute best on the OVERKILL songs featured here (all three tracks pulled from OVERKILL's sole SST release, Triumph of the Will). SWA was the more experimental of the two, though Merill Ward's lyrics are equally stupid with both bands, and that's part of their appeal. D.C.3 is equally interesting. To the uninitiated, "D.C." are the initials of BLACK FLAG's Dez Cadena, and D.C.3 was his less-hardcore side project. The SST roster at this time was particularly incestuous, with original BLACK FLAG bassist Chuck Dukowski playing in both SWA and WURM.

The original SST cassette was over 80 minutes long, so in order to format the compilation for CD, two songs were cut. While maintaining five BLACK FLAG tracks and four SAINT VITUS tracks, the CD version of the release omits OVERKILL's kickass rager "Head On", and D.C.3's interesting psychedelic rocker "We Feel the Sky". Since G.O.M.E. does indeed care about your future (assuming you have one), I'm including both omitted songs.

ACRIMONY - BONG ON - LIVE LONG! (2007)

This is a great compilation for completists, as well as those of you just discovering the greatness of ACRIMONY. Bong On - Live Long! compiles The Acid Elephant EP with the ACRIMONY side of the CHRUCH OF MISERY split, and separates the EPs with two tracks from hard-to-find compilations. "Earthchild Inferno" was originally released on Rise Above's 1996 Dark Passages Vol. II compilation, while "O Baby" (a STATUS QUO cover) was originally featured on Peaceville's tenth anniversary disc. In my opinion, the best thing about Bong On - Live Long! is that it rescues ACRIMONY's last five recordings, which were quite possibly their very best, from obscurity. When the band called it quits, these recordings were inexplicably thrown on a split release with CHURCH OF MISERY - a stupid pairing that scared away all but the most devout ACRIMONY fans. Those tracks resurface here, though, in all their glory and among other gems from one of hard rock's most underrated bands. This is a great place to start for new fans working their back through ACRIMONY's catalog. For the diehards? It's kind of sad. This is a band that seemed to progress ten-fold with every recording session. Each release was better than its predecessor, and few would argue that the band's two LPs are bona fide genre CLASSICS. Bong On - Live Long! showcases a band clearly in top creative form. While that's obviously the key selling point of the record, it's also proof positive that the band left us just as they hit their stride, and that's unfortunate.

DREAM THEATER - DARK SIDE OF THE MOON (2005)

Taking it back the early days of G.O.M.E. - As go Big Jack's moods, so goes G.O.M.E. I think you guys will really dig this one, though. I'm no DREAM THEATER fan, but I love their cover albums. This is the classic Dark Side record, performed faithfully by DREAM THEATER, in excellent sound quality, and in front of an audience. I love the original, so I listened to this with a skeptical ear, and I still really enjoy it. The highlight of this album, regardless of who is performing the tune, is always "Us & Them". BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME did a great rendition on their covers album, but this DT version probably takes the cake. I'm biased, though. I could listen to a band of trained apes playing "Us & Them" with Ja Rule on vocals and still get misty-eyed. I don't like prog rock, nor do I like DREAM THEATER, but I recommend this to all the Faithful. If you're not already familiar, check it out. You'll be doing yourself a favor. By the way, if the lovely Jodi M. ever happens to stumble across G.O.M.E., yes I'm finally giving DREAM THEATER some credit. I love 'em when they're playing other bands' songs [rimshot]!

ORANGE GOBLIN - COUP DE GRACE (2002)

I didn't come in here to dine. I don't care if you think ORANGE GOBLIN is generic or not, this record is an absolute masterpiece, produced by Scott Reeder and featuring the great John Garcia on two songs ("Jesus Beater" and the absolutely awesome "Made of Rats"). Most of you are probably familiar with this slice of stoner history, but to the uninitiated, you need to check it out. I love ORANGE GOBLIN, but Coup de Grace was their peak. Check out the MISFITS cover "We Bite". This album is flawless from cover to cover.

COULOR HAZE - CHOPPING MACHINE (1995)

I know the G.O.M.E. Faithfully are collectively big COLOUR HAZE fans, so I thought I'd share their 1995 debut. While the newer smooth-groovin' stuff is more typical G.O.M.E. fare, Chopping Machine gives you a glimpse into where it all started. The production is a little thin, and this is clearly the work of a band searching for their identity, but that doesn't mean it's not an enjoyable slab of forgotten rock & roll. This record actually reminds me of a slew of nameless/faceless post-grunge/would-be metal bands from the mid-90s. Chopping Machine is extremely derivative, but the fact that draws from so many styles (often on the same song) makes it an entertaining release.
