UFOMAMMUT - Idolum (2008)

Yes. More Italian Rockers...

Formed in 1999, Italian avant-rockers UFOmammut are a psychedelic sludge band with influences ranging from Neurosis, Kyuss, Pink Floyd and early Sabbath. Consisting of core trio Poia (Guitars, Synths), Urlo (Bass, Vocals, Synths, Fx) and Vita (Drums), they invite Lorenzer of ‘Lent0’ and vocalist Rose Kemp to add their magic to two tracks. With an evil running time of 66minutes and 6 seconds, the Italian trio deliver 7 hard-hitting tracks which range from 5-10 minutes, the exception being the half hour monolith ‘Void/Elephantom’ which closes proceedings. The sound of UFOmammut is a unique combination of crushing post-metal fused with elements of stoner rock and space-rock. Occupying a similarly rough and unpolished aesthetic as early Isis, their sound simmers with an apocalyptic power which is inset with spacey undercurrents. (from expertmusic.com)

Astronautas - Electro-Cidade (2004)

Our friend Jody Frosty dared me to post some Brasilian rock bands...and it's true, We never posted any Brasilian band (even thouhg one of my all time fav band is from Brasil, Sepultura), so.. here it is my friend..I found this on his blog @ a-conspiracy and is very interesting, I have to pay more atention to Brasilian Rock scene.."O mais Grande do mundo"

Astronautas is a band from Recife, Brazil that make a sound with a bunch of guitars with some electronics effects in way half industrial, half stoner. In this second record, the band shows a great production with all the rhythyms and solos are very clear and well balanced, wich makes a musculous sound. Fantastic record! Black Flag - The Process of Weeding Out (1985)

Their instrumental album "The Process of Weeding Out" Aptly named because many fans loathed this album as a departure from hardcore which "weeded out" those fans and also because most of the band with the exception of Henry Rollins had begun to get stoned frequently and the music on this ep certainly reflects that. Stoner Jazz Hardcore Jams to the max.

Bongzilla - Gateway (2002)

It's time for some Sludge here in the Gome...
I find it hard to place them genre-wise, but simply for the sake of comparison: they're a little more mid-tempo than most sludgecore, but not aggro mid-tempo like Cavity or something. Their guitar sound is very round, thick, and heavy, but not terribly abrasive, which is closer akin to stonerrock. The vocals shred like crusty sludgecore. The weed lyrics are straight up stoner. Would you call this sludge? I don't know...

ACROSS THE RIVER - N.O. demo (1986)

I think I found something interesting here...this is the Kyuss song "N.O." played 8 years before its official release in "Welcome To Sky Valley"...

ACROSS THE RIVER – “N.O.” (unreleased demo, 1986) Truly, the beginning of everything bearing the Desert Rock toetag. ACROSS THE RIVER were from the high desert, and were Mario Lalli (YAWNING MAN, FATSO JETSON, SORT OF QUARTET, TEN EAST etc.), Scott Reeder (THE OBSESSED, KYUSS, NEBULA etc.) and Alfredo Hernandez (KYUSS, YAWNING MAN, VIC DU MONTE’S PERSONA NON GRATA, etc.). They were young and totally hot n nasty in a bitchen BLACK OAK ARKANSAS meets midperiod BLACK FLAG kind of way. Sadly, they were too early for all them just-post-hardcore kids to fully grok. Plans for a release on SST (working title: Live At County Line) never came to pass...
For now, I have been told that there are like 4 or 5 ATR songs that were recently found on a multitrack... I could get only this one for now, but I will reply with more...
Enjoy my GOMIES...

EARTHLESS - SONIC PRAYER (2005) **FIXED**

Once again, thnx to our anonymous friend...we bring to you this lovely dessert jam...
Stoner rock heroes Earthless are from San Diego. The bandmembers are drummer Mario Rubalcaba from Clikitat Ikatowi and Kawabata Makoto's Hot Snakes, bassist Mike Eginton from Electric Nazarene, and guitarist Isaiah Mitchell from Nebula. The trio plays a brand of slow, prodding, jam-heavy guitar freakout and bass throb echoing everyone in this scene. The difference, however, is that Mitchell can actually play the hell out of his guitar...

FUNKADELIC - FUNKADELIC (1970)

If you enjoyed my treatment of Free Your Mind... and Maggot Brain, then I highly recommend you check out this version of FUNKADELIC's eponymous debut. Like the aforementioned albums, I find this record to be an essential record that's often disregarded because of the bad production. Funkadelic sets off the trailblazing career of George Clinton, Eddie Hazel & company in grand fashion. The highlights are probably the bookends, "Mommy, What's a Funkadelic?" and "What Is Soul?" (by the way, soul is the ring around your bathtub), but there's some excellent material in between. I find "Music for My Mother" to be one of the band's strangest trips, and perfect background music for crumbling some of your town's finest. This crew would go on to create a number of classics, but Funkadelic is a classic debut, and an interesting look inside the chaos that would come to the forefront later that year.

1. Mommy, What's a Funkadelic?
2. I Bet You
3. Music for My Mother
4. I Got a Thing, You Got a Thing, Everybody's Got a Thing

MC5 - HIGH TIME (1971)

While Kick out the Jams is commonly (and deservedly) hailed as a rock & roll classic, the equally solid High Time is often lost in its shadow. This was the mighty MC5's swan song and recorded under much duress (though you'd never guess that from the performances). What the album lacks in the band's trademark political venom, it makes up for with solid production, courtesy of Geoffrey Haslam, and a strong set of songs. Hell, Wayne Kramer's "Poison" is my favorite MC5 song. The production here is great, considering it was '71. The sound of High Time is audibly better than other Detroit releases from its time period (FUNKADELIC, STOOGES, etc.) in that you can not only hear the bass, but you can hear it carrying the band as a functional aspect of the rhythm section. Check it out on the galloping closer, "Skunk". If the 13th Floor is a microcosm of intelligent rock fans, which I believe it is, the Faithful will always be torn down the middle when it comes to Back in the USA. We should be able to agree unanimously, though, that the MC5 came in, and went out, with a timeless classic.

THE MONKS - BLACK MONK TIME (1966)

This incredible and influential piece of rock history comes to us compliments of our main man KSN. I'd always heard ABOUT this record, but never actually heard it before KSN shared the wealth. I found myself absolutely blown away by the music here. Black Monk Time certainly defies classicifation, especially considering the era and musical climate of its release. This is angry, experimental garage rock with the occasional wink-and-nudge that fans of DEAD KENNEDYS, BLACK FLAG and the MINUTEMEN will appreciate. THE MONKS' brand of rock is neither melodic or soothing. It's extremely heavy and driving, which is remarkable in itself, considering that this record predates traditional guitar distortion. If I had to make a comparison, I'd probably use The Velvet Underground & Nico, though with shrill and frantic electric organ in place of John Cale's violin. Of course, it has to be noted that Black Monk Time actually PREDECED VU&N. Honestly, I feel like I've been missing out on a key part of rock history - especially the style of rock towards which I personally tend to gravitate. Respect your elders, GOMIES.

DANZIG - DANZIG (1988)

Let it be said, straight out of the fuckin' gate, that Glenn Danzig is a jerkoff. The guy from Southside Kings (or whatever), whose only claim to fame is laying Danzig out backstage on YouTube...he's a jerkoff, too. That said, DANZIG's solo debut is a fucking monster of a record. I'd actually forgotten how great it was until I rediscovered it snowed-in this afternoon. "Twist of Cain" is obviously a metal classic, and "Possession" is G.O.M.E. material through and through, but my personal favorites are "Soul on Fire" and "End of Time". Plain and simple, it's a big dumb metal record that everyone should have.

BUDGIE - IN FOR THE KILL! (1974)

Just about any review you find online will, at some point, mention In for the Kill! as one of the most popular NWOBHM albums. Perhaps that was true across the pond, but the record's cult fame in the U.S. can be almost directly attributed to METALLICA's cover of "Crash Course in Brain Surgery", and James Hetfield's constant mentions of BUDGIE in all the old metal rags. That said, "Crash Course...", in all 157 seconds of its glory, isn't even among the the greatest songs featured here. In 1974, BUDGIE had more in common with RUSH than any band that would eventually be classified as NWOBHM. These guys were too talented to be confined to one specific genre, despite Tony Bourge's mastery of the heavy riff. Some rock cats, GOMIES included, might find the directional shifts over the course of this album to be annoying at best, and totally pretentious at worst. You know, the way non-fans feel about RUSH. I personally dig extended suites like "Zoom Club", because they keep me interested and wondering what will happen next. Shorter numbers, like the aforementioned "Crash Course..." and the mellow "Wondering What Everyone Knows", set the stage for what's to come. "Hammer & Tongs" could've slid into any ZEPPELIN tracklisting nicely, and "Living on Your Own" is, in my opinion, BUDGIE's best song. While I've dropped a lot of names and comparisons here, the best way to enjoy In for the Kill! is to forget about all those bands and sounds and listen to the record as a whole.

1. In for the Kill!
2. Crash Course in Brain Surgery
3. Wondering What Everyone Knows
4. Zoom Club

JELLO BIAFRA with D.O.A. - LAST SCREAM OF THE MISSING NEIGHBORS (1990)

This is truly a holy (or unholy, if you're a fascist) union. Jello and DEAD KENNEDYS (along with FLIPPER and BLACK FLAG) captured my attention and imagination during my formative adolescent years, and helped create the man that is Big Jack as opposed to Assrock Douchebag Skid Row Rules Jack. Some younger GOMIES might not recall times like these, but still fresh in my memory are the days when music info wasn't immediately available. You tried to keep up via scene 'zines and trade mags, but by the time those were printed and distributed, the news was old. Despite being an avid fan of both DEAD KENNEDYS and D.O.A., I had no news of this collaboration until I saw the record in the store. No endcap display, no big cardboard cutout of Biafra advertising his first post-KENNEDYS project, just a record subtlely filed under "B" in the "alternative" section.

The record itself is a legitimate masterpiece, recalling the absolute best of DEAD KENNEDYS and D.O.A., only heavier and more angry. Biafra sounds reborn, and his renewed focus is a perfect match for the almost-metal crunch of D.O.A. There's not a bad note or unnecessary lyric on the entire record, but my personal favorite is "Full Metal Jackoff". Clocking in at 14:00, it can hardly be described as a punk song, but it's my all-time favorite Biafra piece, KENNEDYS or otherwise. Joey Keithley's slow-grind riff is simply a better fit than, say, East Bay Ray's more surf-inspired style. Another highlight is the seemingly unlikely cover of THE ANIMALS' "We Gotta Get Out of This Place". It not only succeeds, but does so with flying colors. Throw in some excellent cover art, compliments of the great Winston Smith, and you've got a bona fide masterpiece.

3. Wish I Was in El Salvador
4. Power Is Boring
5. We Gotta Get Out of This Place
6. Full Metal Jackoff
