DEAD MEADOW - DEAD MEADOW (2001)

This is a band I haven't seen discussed much here at G.O.M.E., so I thought I'd offer up their debut. It took me some time to really catch on to Washington DC's DEAD MEADOW, though now I can't get enough of them. To be perfectly honest, Jason Simon is still far from my favorite vocalist, and DEAD MEADOW's eponymous release is far from their best work, but it's a great place to start. The pieces were already in place, from the fuzz-fest opener "Sleepy Silver Door", through the trippy ballad "Dragonfly", all the way through the closing "Rocky Mountain High" (no, not the John Denver song of the same name). Perhaps most interesting are the bizarre twists and turns between those tracks. Is this stoner rock? Neo-Psychedelia? Indie rock? I'm not particularly fond of compartmentalizing music and attaching cute little labels to it. DEAD MEADOW is amazing in the sense that they're absolutely impossible to categorize.

1. Sleepy Silver Door
2. Indian Bones
3. Dragonfly
4. Lady
5. Greensky Greenlake
6. Beyond the Fields We Know
7. At the Edge of the Wood
8. Rocky Mountain High
