DANZIG - DANZIG (1988)

Let it be said, straight out of the fuckin' gate, that Glenn Danzig is a jerkoff. The guy from Southside Kings (or whatever), whose only claim to fame is laying Danzig out backstage on YouTube...he's a jerkoff, too. That said, DANZIG's solo debut is a fucking monster of a record. I'd actually forgotten how great it was until I rediscovered it snowed-in this afternoon. "Twist of Cain" is obviously a metal classic, and "Possession" is G.O.M.E. material through and through, but my personal favorites are "Soul on Fire" and "End of Time". Plain and simple, it's a big dumb metal record that everyone should have.

1. Twist of Cain
2. Not of this World
3. She Rides
4. Soul on Fire
5. Am I Demon?
6. Mother
7. Possession
8. End of Time
9. The Hunter

BUDGIE - IN FOR THE KILL! (1974)

Just about any review you find online will, at some point, mention In for the Kill! as one of the most popular NWOBHM albums. Perhaps that was true across the pond, but the record's cult fame in the U.S. can be almost directly attributed to METALLICA's cover of "Crash Course in Brain Surgery", and James Hetfield's constant mentions of BUDGIE in all the old metal rags. That said, "Crash Course...", in all 157 seconds of its glory, isn't even among the the greatest songs featured here. In 1974, BUDGIE had more in common with RUSH than any band that would eventually be classified as NWOBHM. These guys were too talented to be confined to one specific genre, despite Tony Bourge's mastery of the heavy riff. Some rock cats, GOMIES included, might find the directional shifts over the course of this album to be annoying at best, and totally pretentious at worst. You know, the way non-fans feel about RUSH. I personally dig extended suites like "Zoom Club", because they keep me interested and wondering what will happen next. Shorter numbers, like the aforementioned "Crash Course..." and the mellow "Wondering What Everyone Knows", set the stage for what's to come. "Hammer & Tongs" could've slid into any ZEPPELIN tracklisting nicely, and "Living on Your Own" is, in my opinion, BUDGIE's best song. While I've dropped a lot of names and comparisons here, the best way to enjoy In for the Kill! is to forget about all those bands and sounds and listen to the record as a whole.

1. In for the Kill!
2. Crash Course in Brain Surgery
3. Wondering What Everyone Knows
4. Zoom Club
5. Hammer & Tongs
6. Running from My Soul
7. Living on Your Own

JELLO BIAFRA with D.O.A. - LAST SCREAM OF THE MISSING NEIGHBORS (1990)

This is truly a holy (or unholy, if you're a fascist) union. Jello and DEAD KENNEDYS (along with FLIPPER and BLACK FLAG) captured my attention and imagination during my formative adolescent years, and helped create the man that is Big Jack as opposed to Assrock Douchebag Skid Row Rules Jack. Some younger GOMIES might not recall times like these, but still fresh in my memory are the days when music info wasn't immediately available. You tried to keep up via scene 'zines and trade mags, but by the time those were printed and distributed, the news was old. Despite being an avid fan of both DEAD KENNEDYS and D.O.A., I had no news of this collaboration until I saw the record in the store. No endcap display, no big cardboard cutout of Biafra advertising his first post-KENNEDYS project, just a record subtlely filed under "B" in the "alternative" section.

The record itself is a legitimate masterpiece, recalling the absolute best of DEAD KENNEDYS and D.O.A., only heavier and more angry. Biafra sounds reborn, and his renewed focus is a perfect match for the almost-metal crunch of D.O.A. There's not a bad note or unnecessary lyric on the entire record, but my personal favorite is "Full Metal Jackoff". Clocking in at 14:00, it can hardly be described as a punk song, but it's my all-time favorite Biafra piece, KENNEDYS or otherwise. Joey Keithley's slow-grind riff is simply a better fit than, say, East Bay Ray's more surf-inspired style. Another highlight is the seemingly unlikely cover of THE ANIMALS' "We Gotta Get Out of This Place". It not only succeeds, but does so with flying colors. Throw in some excellent cover art, compliments of the great Winston Smith, and you've got a bona fide masterpiece.

1. That's Progress
2. Attack of the Peacekeepers
3. Wish I Was in El Salvador
4. Power Is Boring
5. We Gotta Get Out of This Place
6. Full Metal Jackoff

Flower Travellin' Band - Satori (1979)

Thanks to an anonymous friend...
Flower Travelling Band was Japan's answer to Led Zeppelin meeting Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath at the Ash Ra Temple. Simply put, they played grand, spacey, tripped-out hard rock with a riffy base that was only two steps removed from the blues, but their manner of interpreting those steps came from an acid trip...

HARDWARE - THIRD EYE OPEN (1992)

Let it be known that while I often use too many superlatives describing my favorite FUNKADELIC records, the P-FUNK conglomerate as a whole is not without its faults. Take Bootsy, for instance. Above all, before even mentioning the Space Bass, it should be said that he's a great guy. Friendly, approachable and every bit as cool as his records would indicate. His work with his RUBBER BAND stands with PARLIAMENT and FUNKADELIC's absolute best. My sole criticism of BOOTZILLA is that he always seemed most inspired under the wing of George Clinton. In fact, he hasn't recorded a cover-to-cover CLASSIC (and I do mean CLASSIC...not "good album") without being under George's umbrella. My feeling is that he tends to follow trends at times, rather than raise the bar, and that makes some his projects sound and feel a bit dated...which brings me to HARDWARE. C'mon, man...it's Bootsy and Buddy Miles! Produced by Bill Laswell! This should've been great! And the Bootsy-penned numbers are, despite the constant shred-on-10 nature of Laswell favorite Stevie Salas. Too often, though, Bootsy seems content to simply avoid the spotlight and hold down the low end in the background. Regardless, this is a solid hard rock/funk record with some soaring highs...and the lows are only low because of the rhythm section involved. I would've liked to hear a project like this with Eddie Hazel in Stevie's place.

1. Got a Feelin'
2. Waiting on You
3. What's Goin' Down
4. Love Obsession (Where the Eagle Flies)
5. Hard Look
6. Shake It
7. The Walls Came Down

BLACK MERDA - BLACK MERDA (1967)

Here's one for Matias and KSN, and everyone else looking for some old school rock with a groove. The mighty BLACK MERDA was easily missed in the wake of the Hendrix explosion, but the record stands the test of time, even 41 years later. On their eponymous debut, BLACK MERDA ran the gauntlet from heavy riffs through funky soul to Delta blues and the occasional layover in what I can only imagine Syd Barret was hearing in his head around this time. I shared this album with the equally funk-obsessed JAKE LEE DILEMMA, and they had the same reponse: "Where can I get more?". Sadly, BLACK MERDA's sophomore record wasn't released until 1971, by which time the band had embraced a more FAMILY STONE-esque brand of groove. This debut, though, is truly a diamond in the rough. Featuring the twin guitar attack of the Hawkins brothers and a wealth of musical direction, BLACK MERDA's 1967 debut is a 13th Floor REQUIREMENT!

1. Prophet
2. Think of Me
3. Cynthy-Ruth
4. Over and Over

THE NO W.T.O. COMBO - LIVE FROM THE BATTLE IN SEATTLE (1999)

The NO W.T.O. COMBO was a one-off supergroup assembled by Jello Biafra (DEAD KENNEDYS) and Krist Novoselic (NIRVANA, SWEET 75, FLIPPER), and also featuring Kim Thayil (SOUNDGARDEN) and Gina Mainwal (SWEET 75). This set was recorded in the wake of the chatoic 1999 World Health Organization Ministerial Conference in Seattle. In the wake of the chaos that ensued, those of you familiar with Biafra's work will be none too surprised at the venom he spews throughout this performance. Those of you unfamiliar with the "Battle of Seattle" should take full advantage of Wikipedia and YouTube, and have a look at the price of supposed freedom in Amerika. That said, even during these optimistic times in the good ol' U.S. of A., I find the majority of Biafra's work very current and relevant, and the NO W.T.O. COMBO project is no different.

The music? I've always found Kim Thayil's playing interesting, in a rabid-dog-that-sleeps-at-your-feet kind of way. The two originals here, "New Feudalism" and "Electronic Plantation" have an almost BLACK FLAG-esque ugliness to them. Thayil is clearly channeling both Greg Ginn and East Bay Ray on these tunes. The highlight, though, is a song I've always loved: "Full Metal Jackoff" (originally recorded by Biafra with D.O.A.). Thayil's able to slide into Greg Ginn mode throughout the performance without sacrificing the pummeling nature of the riff. The performance is so tight and ferocious, it's easy to get wrapped up in the music and not realize it runs over 16 MINUTES!

2. Let's Lynch the Landlord
3. New Feudalism
4. Electronic Plantation

FIELDS - FIELDS (1969)

Psychonauts rejoice! I discovered this obscurity during my lengthy high-atus (© The Good Captain), and the first coherent thought I had was that you lot would most certainly dig this record (especially Matias and the aforecredited Cap'n). The first side consists of shorter trips, toying with a touch of funk and fantastic four-string thump , but rockin' the whole way. The real meat of Fields, though, is its second side. "Love Is the Word" is a side-long suite that's rooted in a DOORS-with-distortion blues, but makes room for some soaring background vocals fit for Motown. The entire piece is insane. In closing, I think this is something that everyone on the 13th Floor needs in their collection. And remember...if it's too old, you're too loud!

3. Take You Home

ROBIN TROWER - BRIDGE OF SIGHS (1974)

Matias already posted an excellent Trower set from this time period, so I thought I'd share the timeless classic Bridge of Sighs. This is a truly remarkable record, showcasing Trower's Hendrixian guitar mastery (of course), as well as his songwriting skills. Don't miss out by ignorantly dismissing Bridge of Sighs as a "player album". The ballad "In This Place" would fit in comfortably on an early FUNKADELIC album, while "About to Begin" might quite possibly feature the most beautiful melody ever written. This is one of those rare albums that is suitable for plugging in and learning the tunes, or kicking back in a cloud of freshly exhaled ganja smoke. Strike while the iron's hot, folks. This ain't the easiest slab of wax to find these days. At least at any reasonable price.

1. Day of the Eagle

THE BLACK CROWES - 8/13/08 - WICHITA, KS (2008)

I caught this show last summer with nate.tron (of the JAKE LEE DILEMMA), and it was a highlight of the summer concert season. To those of you who might've been turned off by the CROWES' previous hit-heavy tours, this jam should win you back over. Hell, I love "My Morning Song" as much as anyone, but I've heard it performed numerous times. In its place, the Wichita crowd was treated to a 12-minute jam of "Nebakanezer". This set features lots of stretched out jamming, which I think will appeal to the G.O.M.E. Faithful.

Soundboard recording.

Also - if you ever find yourself in Wichita, make sure you see what's going down at the Cotillion Ballroom. It's one of the coolest and most unique venues I've been to. The acoustics are fantastic, the staff is cool, and the drinks are priced right.

FUNKADELIC - LIVE: MEADOWBROOK (1971)

It's extremely difficult to articulate the greatness of this recording. As far as official releases go, this is your best shot at hearing a young Eddie Hazel live and in top form. If you're new to FUNKADELIC, please don't confuse this record and lineup with the P-FUNK ARMY of later years. This FUNKADELIC was very much a rock band, and featured a tight roster of top-notch innovators rivaled only by JIMI's BAND OF GYPSYS. This is probably the definitive live recording of Eddie at his absolute best.
