TROUBLE - ONE FOR THE ROAD [EP] (1994)

Rick Rubin gets a lot of credit for his work with Johnny Cash, Glenn Danzig and countless others, though he's rarely mentioned as the lummox that dropped the ball with FLIPPER, UNIDA and, of course, the legendary TROUBLE. One for the Road was a post-American Recordings EP sold on tour in Europe. I probably wouldn't call this particular release essential, but if you're like me, you want all the TROUBLE you can get your hands on. It's kinda cool hearing earlier (and rougher) versions of "Another Day" and the classic "Requiem". G.O.M.E.'s all-time most downloaded album is TROUBLE's Manic Frustration, so I know the band is well-liked on the 13th floor. With that it mind, I recommend it.

I'm back, fuckers! Thanks for sticking around. I don't have a whole lot to say that I didn't mention on the show, but I do apologize for the lengthy high-atus (© The Good Captain). I've had a lot going on, guys. Hell, you all know how it is, the GOMIES are the sharpest bunch of bad motherfuckers in the world! Sometimes, life gets in the way of rockin' and takin' it to the people. It SHOULDN'T, but it does. So I'm not gonna make any more promises I can't keep. My sole vow to you, the G.O.M.E. Faithful, is that I will try my absolute DAMNEDEST to have a new show for you every week.

I think this week's show is pretty solid, though you already know if I didn't like it, I wouldn't play it. I think back to Cheeto saying he burned each show for his feline friends. He can't be the only cat doing that, so this week's installment is all about positive energy. It's getting warmer outside, at least in my neck of the woods, so this is rock & roll to light a grill to. Drink some beers or corn whiskey. Roll up your secret "special occasions" stash. Plug in and come up with some rockin' shit for The Elevator Sessions. And make sure you let Matias know how much you appreciate his hard work. If it wasn't for him, G.O.M.E. would've faded away long ago. He's kept us alive and thriving and kicking ass with steel-toed Argentinean boots!

The overall production is quite excellent as well.

BRANT BJORK - SABBIA (2006)

Take it or leave it, but I've noticed that pretty much everyone to stumble across our cozy little corny of the blogosphere tends to worship at the altar of Brother Brant. This soundtrack is certainly cool for what it is, but ultimately, you need the entire visual experience of the film to truly appreciate it. There are definitely some highlights here, but a great deal of Sabbia's music is simple demos and outtakes in less-than-crisp quality. That doesn't mean the tracks aren't interesting - I'm just not gonna sit here and say the music by itself is essential Brant Bjork. It's cool to groove to, but for the full experience, head on over to Amazon and order the DVD. Kate McCabe did a fantastic job giving Brother Brant's music visual accompaniment. And there are used copies for like $6.

ROACHPOWDER - VIEJO DIABLO (1998)

This one comes to you, the G.O.M.E. Faithful, by way of our main man The Good Captain, of Sonic Daydream and Inner-Head Flight Royale fame - and what a killer contribution it is! How did I miss out on these guys? This is one incredible slab of rock, Gomies. Like I told the Cap'n, this record reminds me of both early MONSTER MAGNET and PANTERA's more groove-based music. I don't want to gush too much, and maybe it's just that I needed to discover something new after a tumultuous couple of weeks, but I find this to be a damn near flawless rock record. Over the course of Viejo Diablo, you'll hear traces of the aforementioned MONSTER MAGNET and PANTERA, as well as KYUSS, HAWKWIND, SABBATH, and even the STONES and STOOGES! Brilliant rock, excellent guitar work, heavy on the smack and trippies, tailor-suited for G.O.M.E., compliments of The Good Cap'n. Dig it.

This re-up is for Alice in Wonderland (sorry for the delay!). For the uninitiated, FIREBALL MINISTRY kicks ass, and they're more than likely much better than your favorite band. This EP in particular is very cool, as it features Rev. Rota & Co.'s unique twist on some tunes by ALICE COOPER, JUDAS PRIEST, MISFITS, AEROSMITH, and BLUE CHEER. I particularly dig the AEROSMITH cover ("Movin' Out"), but the whole EP is great. Especially if you don't own Second Great Awakening for the original tracks. "Maidens of Venus" is among the band's absolute finest work.

Cheeto and the Sludge Swamp staff recently upped this one, but in case you missed it, here it is again. The mighty ACID KING absolutely KILLS this set on our brand of rock's grandest stage, the 2007 Roadburn Festival. Lori's never sounded better vocally, and her guitar is just punishing. While the tracklisting reads somewhat like a Greatest Hits set (as if ACID KING's had any "hits"!), the performance is top-notch in every respect. Essential.

COLOUR HAZE is always a big hit, both on Elevated Radio and here at G.O.M.E. They're one of my favorite bands, and they've never released a bad record, yet they've continued to progress and evolve with each project. I've spent a lot of time listening to Tempel as of late, and I've decided it's my personal favorite. As far as albums go, I'm hard-pressed to name a more fluid and cohesive one. Start-to-finish, this is the perfect soundtrack for enjoying an elevated state of consciousness. Chef's selections? The whole record, folks. Don't skip a single note.

1994 was the year,Trailer Hitch was the group,this band of five individuals ruined so many tour vehicles,stages,borrowed instruments and dressing rooms that I can't mention the individuals by name.These were nice men during the day,then something changed when the smell of the bar hit their collective olfactory sences and it was time to start thinking about the mission ahead of them.They became some sort of single brained machine capable of anything and consuming everything.There are hundreds of incredible stories from shows of raw meat,explosives,blood and a shit load of cold beer smashed together with Marshalls to eleven,bombastic drumming,while being spearheaded by a screaming sinewy six foot three ex-demolitions specialist who enjoyed hurting himself while in the nude with combat boots on.The mix of personalities in this band was cumbustable at best and the band longevity was short(6 years)but blindingly bright(due to a visit to a indiana fireworks outlet).This was a band who was cursed from the jump,Studio sessions wrecked by inept engineers,Instruments stolen,kicked out and banned from clubs ..sometimes halfway thru the set,vehicles broken into and members nearly murdered,Trailer Hitch somehow released two CD's but recorded four..they should of been huge but they were their own worst enemies....thats why we loved em so god damn much,cuz they were Beautiful fuckin Disasters...

Your humble host injured himself this morning, during domestic duties, leaving a hole in his right hand in which a goldfish could live a long and happy life. The medication for said injury, especially coupled with the usual Big Jack booze intake, might sound like the makings of a great show. Unfortunately, I'm just not up to it. FAITH NO MORE - LIVE IN LIBOURNE (1990)

If I've said it once, I've said it a million times - As go Big Jack's moods, so goes G.O.M.E. A lot of you already know that Mike Patton is one of my all-time favorite vocalists, and that FAITH NO MORE is one of my all-time favorite bands. Those of you involved with The Elevator Sessions know that my all-time favorite song, "Zombie Eaters", happens to be a FAITH NO MORE tune (I warn you in advance, you'll not find the definitive version here). That said, here's a FNM set from 1990, recorded live (soundboard) in Libourne, France. I think fans will find a lot to enjoy here, even if Mike Patton was still learning how to use his voice in live performance, as opposed to the studio. He tanks numerous times, and the band itself butchers my all-time favorite song (but they wrote it, so I guess I can let 'em slide). Still, there's a lot to like. Billy Gould's bass never sounded tighter, and how many groups have you heard cover a Nestle's commercial (check the intro to "Surprise! You're Dead!")? This set is the sound of a band still cutting its proverbial teeth, figuring out what works and what doesn't, while keeping their sets interesting and entertaining. In my opinion, FAITH NO MORE hit their stride with Angel Dust, and became an excellent live band, as well as in the studio. This boot focuses on The Real Thing, and the set is very much like the record: uneven, schizophrenic, a little sloppy...but ultimately enjoyable.

SST PROGRAM: ANNIHILATOR (1986) [re-up]

Not really standard G.O.M.E. fare, SST's Program: Annihilator compilation is not only a schizophrenically enjoyable listen, but an important historic artifact. I bought this cassette back in '86, and I still have it to this day. Since it took me 21 years to score a copy on CD, I thought I'd pass it on to the Faithful and see what you all think. In 1986, the legendary SST label was eschewing it's punk and art rock, for which it was most famous, in favor of a decidedly metallic direction. Not coincidentally, that was also the direction the label's flagship band, BLACK FLAG, was pursuing at the time. Much like today, the underground fans of the '80s were an extremely fickle bunch, and by most accounts this stylistic 180 was a dismal failure. Personally, I enjoyed the majority of the music here in 1986, and I enjoy it just as much today. I'm assuming most of you are familiar with BLACK FLAG and SAINT VITUS, the two bands featured most heavily on this compilation. The obscure gem, though, might come in the form of OVERKILL (the LA biker punks, not the terrible NY speed metal band). OVERKILL was Merill Ward's (Greg Ginn's buddy) vehicle for creating big dumb MOTORHEAD-MEETS-BLACK FLAG rock & roll. SWA is another Ward band, and while they were more prolific (though I hesitate to say "successful"), Ward is at his absolute best on the OVERKILL songs featured here (all three tracks pulled from OVERKILL's sole SST release, Triumph of the Will). SWA was the more experimental of the two, though Merill Ward's lyrics are equally stupid with both bands, and that's part of their appeal. D.C.3 is equally interesting. To the uninitiated, "D.C." are the initials of BLACK FLAG's Dez Cadena, and D.C.3 was his less-hardcore side project. The SST roster at this time was particularly incestuous, with original BLACK FLAG bassist Chuck Dukowski playing in both SWA and WURM.

The original SST cassette was over 80 minutes long, so in order to format the compilation for CD, two songs were cut. While maintaining five BLACK FLAG tracks and four SAINT VITUS tracks, the CD version of the release omits OVERKILL's kickass rager "Head On", and D.C.3's interesting psychedelic rocker "We Feel the Sky". Since G.O.M.E. does indeed care about your future (assuming you have one), I'm including both omitted songs.

JUMBO'S KILLCRANE - THE SLOW DECAY (2004)

Sludgemonsters JUMBO'S KILLCRANE originated just down the interstate from Big Jack Manor, performing in Lawrence, Kansas and recording this record in tiny Eudora. I would rate JKC among the more interesting sludge bands, if only because their location lends itself to a more psychedelic bent than most of their contemporaries. If the title track sounds familiar, it's probably because I've played it on ELEVATED RADIO. I find it to be the best song on the album. The entire album is solid, if somewhat of an endurance test. The mighty closer, "Die, Stabbed" has some very cool interplay between the guitar and bass during the more frantic passages. In closing, The Slow Decay is a great take on a genre firmly rooted in the south - not a WEEZER-lovin'/ honk-for-hemp college town where the best record shop in town is called The Love Garden*. Brutal sludge from a most unlikely place.

THROTTLEROD - STARVE THE DEAD [EP] (2005)

First off, I believe Cheeto & Co. have posted the entire THROTTLEROD discography over at The Sludge Swamp, so if you want to check out some of this band's heavier stuff, you know where to go. That said, you all know how much I love heavy music, and I've gotta say that I'm not a huge fan of any THROTTLEROD release other than this one. Starve the Dead is an EP akin to ALICE IN CHAINS' Sap or Jar of Flies, featuring more melodic and mellow songwriting...stuff that would sound out of place on the band's more rockin' LPs. The band's usual fare isn't bad, just unremarkable. At least to me. Regardless, Starve the Dead is an incredible EP, and "Borrowed Chair" in itself is worth your download effort.

ROLLERBALL - LET YOUR HANG DOWN [EP] (200)

Have you been listening to ELEVATED RADIO? If so, then you already know that these Aussies kick some serious ass! Once you get over how infectious the grooves and riffs are, you'll notice that the production is absolutely stellar. I love the sound of this EP. The band is tight, but the fantastic drumming is perfect in the mix, and thusly it stands out (assuming you have an ear for rhythm). I think too often, bands get in the habit of "rawkin'", concentrating on riffs so much that they sacrifice melody. That's definitely not the case here, as every tune here will stick to the roof of your '66 GTO. Supercharged rock & roll from the land down under, highly recommended.

MINDFUNK - PEOPLE WHO FELL FROM THE SKY (1995)

I was a big fan of MINDFUNK in the early '90s, and my main man Rinjo recently resparked my interest in the band. We both combed the net for People Who Fell from the Sky, MINDFUNK's impossible-to-find 1995 swan song, with Rinjo having the quicker hand. Speaking of Rinjo, I don't believe he thinks as highly of this album as the other two releases, but I'll go so far as to call it MINDFUNK's absolute best. By this point in the band's short career, the quirkiness of their eponymous debut had given way to industry bitterness, and, consequently, slower tempos and a more somber tone. At a glance, a few among the G.O.M.E. Faithful will be asking themselves "What the fuck is MINDFUNK doing here?", but trust me - three tracks in, you'll agree that People Who Fell from the Sky and G.O.M.E. are a perfect fit. Very psychedelic with lots of wah, coupled with ample doomsday goodness, this album is, in my humble opinion, a criminally overlooked and long-forgotten masterpiece.

MORKOBOT - MOSTRO (2007)

Is everyone familiar with the flying saucer controversy in Stephenville, Texas? As the details unfold, I would not be at all surprised to learn that Mostro could be heard blasting from the bizarre craft's hi-fi rock system. MORKOBOT certainly sets the soundtrack for visiting other worlds, some beautiful, some not so much, on this limited release LP (500 hand-numbered copies). Mostro is truly a unique instrumental adventure, drawing equally from SABBATH, FLOYD, and HAWKWIND. Not the easiest listen in the world, but ultimately rewarding, I find Mostro to be a sign of great things to come for this Italian band. Highly recommended for all GOMIES watching for strange happenings in the night sky while enjoying an elevated state of mind.

Check this week's show for a double-shot of Mark Lanegan, including a GUTTER TWINS exclusive! Of course, tons of other fantastic rock gets played as well. You guys might very well disagree, but I think this is one of my better shows. I realize I'm setting myself up for criticism simply by saying that, but I dig this show. I liked making it, and I'm currently enjoying listening to it. Make yourself heard - what do YOU think?
