MELVANA (1992)

It's been a while since a Melvins post, so, here is H2F for you guys, enjoy it.

Buzz Osbourne: Guitar & Vocals
Chris Novoselic: Bass
David Grohl: Drums
Recorded on 1.15.92 a Wednesday at the Crocodile Cafe in Seattle, WA. Both these songs are by Flipper. A one-time live collaboration between Buzz and the two members of Nirvana. Nobody seems to know if this was a melvins show that the members of nirvana showed up for and played a couple covers pre or post melvins set and if there were any other songs played either by these three or other groups. According to a 1995 interview with Dave, they played four full songs.

1. Sacrifice
2. Way of the World

MELVINS - HOUDINI LIVE 2005: A LIVE HISTORY OF GLUTTONY & LUST (2006)

A Live History of Gluttony & Lust is the acclaimed "live" version of the classic Houdini record. Never a band to court convention of any kind, LHG&L is not "live" in the traditional sense, but in the purest. There is no crowd noise, because there is no crowd. There is no between-song banter, because there's no audience with whom to engage said banter. No, friends, this is not a concert recording, but rather a live recording of King Buzzo, Dale Crover, and Trevor Dunn playing Houdini in an abandoned warehouse. The sound is immaculate (as one generally expects from a MELVINS recording) and the performance, in my opinion, outshines the 1993 studio recordings. Over the years, Buzz and Dale have proven time and time again that they're comfortable pushing the creative envelope as far as they see fit. It keeps the band inconsistent and unpredictable, which makes them interesting. Despite all their token ribs and pranks, LHG&L proves that, to paraphrase an ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY song, rockin' is indeed their business.

2. Hooch
3. Night Goat
4. Lizzy

MELVINS - LIVE IN WASHINGTON DC (1987)

Thought you guys might appreciate this '87 soundboard of the mighty MELVINS. The recording is quality, if a bit brief (it cuts off going into "Heaviness of the Load"), and highly recommended to fans of the band's early style. I love just about everything King Buzzo and company record. If it wasn't for CLUTCH, the mighty MELVINS would be the world's greatest hard rock band. Here's a great glimpse of how it all started.

1. Let God Be Your Gardener
2. Echohead/Piece Me
3. Vile
4. Dead Dressed
5. Your Blessened
6. Ever Since My Accident
7. Heaviness of the Load (cuts off)

ALTAMONT - OUR DARLING (2001)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Yet another Man's Ruin casualty, Our Darling has the stark historical distinction of being the last album released by the legendary label. If you liked Civil War Fantasy, then you'll probably dig this one...though Dale Crover's southern-fried boogie obsession is toned down a touch in lieu of more MELVINS-esque experimentation. This also marks the emergence of Dale on guitar. He'd already proven his songwriting skills ("Hurter", anyone?), but on Our Darling, he's actually a functional guitarist, providing decent leads and tons of Buzzo-style texture. It goes without saying that as far as guitarists go, Crover is no J Mascis (ironically also a drummer). But he has the gift of writing semi-accessible and memorable riffs, and building great songs around them. Six years later, we still mourn the demise of the legendary Man's Ruin, but at least they went out on a high note.

1. Saint of All Killers
2. Short Eyes
3. Our Darling
4. Pirate Love
5. Chicken Lover
6. Dead Car
7. Swami
8. Peace Creep
9. Stripey Hole

MELVINS - LIVE AT ROADBURN 2007 (2007)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Well, this isn't A+ quality, but I tweaked it a bit and brought the low end up, so it's at least listenable. When I get a better copy, I'll re-up it. 'Til then, here's the mighty MELVINS from April's Roadburn fest in Tilburg. (A) Senile Animal is played nearly in its entirety (only the intro to "A Vast Filthy Prison" is played), though the highlight for me is "The Bit". Anyone familiar with the MELVINS is aware of their penchant for odd covers, to the appearance of CREAM's "Deserted Cities of the Heart" should come as a surprise to no one. The whole set is intense, and certainly worthy of headlining the year's best rock festival. Eventually I'll get the BIG BUSINESS set posted and you guys will have a kickass 2CD set.

1. The Talking Horse
2. The Bloated Pope
3. Civilized Worm
4. Oven
5. Suicide in Progress
6. Set Me Straight
7. Deserted Cities of the Heart
8. Sky Pup
9. Let It All Be
10. Blood Witch
11. A History of Drunks
12. Rat Faced Cranny
13. The Hawk
14. You've Never Been Right
15. A History of Bad Men
16. The Mechanical Bride
17. Vast Filthy Intro
18. The Bit
19. The Ballad of Dwight Fry
