BLACK MERDA - BLACK MERDA (1967)

Here's one for Matias and KSN, and everyone else looking for some old school rock with a groove. The mighty BLACK MERDA was easily missed in the wake of the Hendrix explosion, but the record stands the test of time, even 41 years later. On their eponymous debut, BLACK MERDA ran the gauntlet from heavy riffs through funky soul to Delta blues and the occasional layover in what I can only imagine Syd Barret was hearing in his head around this time. I shared this album with the equally funk-obsessed JAKE LEE DILEMMA, and they had the same reponse: "Where can I get more?". Sadly, BLACK MERDA's sophomore record wasn't released until 1971, by which time the band had embraced a more FAMILY STONE-esque brand of groove. This debut, though, is truly a diamond in the rough. Featuring the twin guitar attack of the Hawkins brothers and a wealth of musical direction, BLACK MERDA's 1967 debut is a 13th Floor REQUIREMENT!

THE NO W.T.O. COMBO - LIVE FROM THE BATTLE IN SEATTLE (1999)

The NO W.T.O. COMBO was a one-off supergroup assembled by Jello Biafra (DEAD KENNEDYS) and Krist Novoselic (NIRVANA, SWEET 75, FLIPPER), and also featuring Kim Thayil (SOUNDGARDEN) and Gina Mainwal (SWEET 75). This set was recorded in the wake of the chatoic 1999 World Health Organization Ministerial Conference in Seattle. In the wake of the chaos that ensued, those of you familiar with Biafra's work will be none too surprised at the venom he spews throughout this performance. Those of you unfamiliar with the "Battle of Seattle" should take full advantage of Wikipedia and YouTube, and have a look at the price of supposed freedom in Amerika. That said, even during these optimistic times in the good ol' U.S. of A., I find the majority of Biafra's work very current and relevant, and the NO W.T.O. COMBO project is no different.

The music? I've always found Kim Thayil's playing interesting, in a rabid-dog-that-sleeps-at-your-feet kind of way. The two originals here, "New Feudalism" and "Electronic Plantation" have an almost BLACK FLAG-esque ugliness to them. Thayil is clearly channeling both Greg Ginn and East Bay Ray on these tunes. The highlight, though, is a song I've always loved: "Full Metal Jackoff" (originally recorded by Biafra with D.O.A.). Thayil's able to slide into Greg Ginn mode throughout the performance without sacrificing the pummeling nature of the riff. The performance is so tight and ferocious, it's easy to get wrapped up in the music and not realize it runs over 16 MINUTES!

4. Electronic Plantation

FIELDS - FIELDS (1969)

Psychonauts rejoice! I discovered this obscurity during my lengthy high-atus (© The Good Captain), and the first coherent thought I had was that you lot would most certainly dig this record (especially Matias and the aforecredited Cap'n). The first side consists of shorter trips, toying with a touch of funk and fantastic four-string thump , but rockin' the whole way. The real meat of Fields, though, is its second side. "Love Is the Word" is a side-long suite that's rooted in a DOORS-with-distortion blues, but makes room for some soaring background vocals fit for Motown. The entire piece is insane. In closing, I think this is something that everyone on the 13th Floor needs in their collection. And remember...if it's too old, you're too loud!

ROBIN TROWER - BRIDGE OF SIGHS (1974)

Matias already posted an excellent Trower set from this time period, so I thought I'd share the timeless classic Bridge of Sighs. This is a truly remarkable record, showcasing Trower's Hendrixian guitar mastery (of course), as well as his songwriting skills. Don't miss out by ignorantly dismissing Bridge of Sighs as a "player album". The ballad "In This Place" would fit in comfortably on an early FUNKADELIC album, while "About to Begin" might quite possibly feature the most beautiful melody ever written. This is one of those rare albums that is suitable for plugging in and learning the tunes, or kicking back in a cloud of freshly exhaled ganja smoke. Strike while the iron's hot, folks. This ain't the easiest slab of wax to find these days. At least at any reasonable price.

1. Day of the Eagle

4. The Fool & Me

THE BLACK CROWES - 8/13/08 - WICHITA, KS (2008)

I caught this show last summer with nate.tron (of the JAKE LEE DILEMMA), and it was a highlight of the summer concert season. To those of you who might've been turned off by the CROWES' previous hit-heavy tours, this jam should win you back over. Hell, I love "My Morning Song" as much as anyone, but I've heard it performed numerous times. In its place, the Wichita crowd was treated to a 12-minute jam of "Nebakanezer". This set features lots of stretched out jamming, which I think will appeal to the G.O.M.E. Faithful.

Soundboard recording.

Also - if you ever find yourself in Wichita, make sure you see what's going down at the Cotillion Ballroom. It's one of the coolest and most unique venues I've been to. The acoustics are fantastic, the staff is cool, and the drinks are priced right.

FUNKADELIC - LIVE: MEADOWBROOK (1971)

It's extremely difficult to articulate the greatness of this recording. As far as official releases go, this is your best shot at hearing a young Eddie Hazel live and in top form. If you're new to FUNKADELIC, please don't confuse this record and lineup with the P-FUNK ARMY of later years. This FUNKADELIC was very much a rock band, and featured a tight roster of top-notch innovators rivaled only by JIMI's BAND OF GYPSYS. This is probably the definitive live recording of Eddie at his absolute best.

Robin Trower - Ebbets Field (1973)

For those who wonder who is Robin Trower, well let me tell you that is known as "The white Jimmy Hendrix".......he is around 70 years old now, and still playing.
This is a very early FM Broadcast of Robin when he was playing 2 sets a night. This broadcast includes two songs from the yet to be released classic Bridge of Sighs. In fact, the arrangement, lyrics and the name of Day of the Eagle is different. Robin introduces the song as "Another Day Another Night" which were lyrics in the album version. Little Bit of Sympathy was the other song included in this set which had not been released. Excellent quality for a 73 Trower show.

Virus Concerns / New Links

After some digging around, I found that I do indeed have an infection. When I create a RAR file, I end up with a Screen Saver file, of the same name, in another folder. While I'm taking care of this nuisance, I went ahead and re-upped the FUNKADELIC, MINUTEFLAG and BOB SEGER albums in ZIP format. Please let me know if there are any problems.

BOB SEGER - BACK IN '72 (1973)

Photobucket

Again, not typical G.O.M.E. fare, but a long-forgotten hard rock gem. Despite interest from fans over the course of 35 years, Back in '72 has never been issued on CD. There's a lot here to appreciate, and not just the original studio version of "Turn the Page". Bob's take on the ALLMANS' great "Midnight Rider" is more Motown boogie and southern blues, while "Rosalie" was covered by Thin Lizzy just two years later. The title track features some excellent riffing from none other than J.J. Cale, while "Neon Sky" makes you want to track Bob down in Detroit and get him on your own songs. All in all, this is a great rock record that has somehow evaded the CD generation. And if I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times: IF IT'S TOO OLD, YOU'RE TOO LOUD!

MINUTEFLAG - MINUTEFLAG [EP] (1986)

Photobucket

This admittedly isn't standard G.O.M.E. fare, but those of you who know me are well aware of my love of the '80s indie scene, the music of BLACK FLAG and the MINUTEMEN in particular. This collaboration between the SST heavyweights took place in 1985, while the MINUTEMEN had recently finished their Project Mersh EP, and BLACK FLAG was recording Loose Nut. The bands agreed that the MINUTEFLAG sessions wouldn't be released until one of the bands split. Within months, the legendary D. Boon was killed in a car accident, effectively putting an end to the mighty MINUTEMEN. To date, SST hasn't issued this small piece of rock history on CD.

FUNKADELIC - FREE YOUR MIND...AND YOUR ASS WILL FOLLOW (1970)

Photobucket

There really aren't enough superlatives in the dictionary to do this album justice. Free Your Mind... is an absolute masterpiece, and its influence spans PRINCE to CLUTCH and all points in between. My sole complaint was always that the production on this album is downright dismal. Fear not, though, as this set has been tweaked and adjusted by yours truly for your listening pleasure. From the 10-minute acid freakout title track, through the classic "Friday Night, August 14th" and Eddie Hazel's amazing leadwork on "I Wanna Know if It's Good to You?", Funkadelic's Free Your Mind...and Your Ass Will Follow is absolutely essential to any rock fan's collection.
